What is therapeutic dance?

Therapeutic dance is a guided movement practice that uses the body as a pathway for emotional processing, nervous system regulation, and self-expression. There is no pressure about choreography or performance, as the goal is to explore yourself, your patterns and your experiences. It combines music, intentional prompts, breath awareness, and somatic principles, and there are moments when participants can share their insights as part of their personal process.
It is not a replacement for medical or psychological treatment, but it can complement therapeutic or personal development work.

Who is therapeutic dance for?

Since there are no performance goals and no prior dance experience is needed, anybody can attend these sessions - but please inform the facilitator in case you have any health condition that might be relevant. Therapeutic dance can be specially helpful for people who spend most of their time "in their head", struggle to access emotions verbally, experience stress or chronic tension, or simply want to explore themselves. It is also an opportunity to find community in a non-competitive space.

What are the potential benefits of therapeutic dance?

While experiences vary, participants often claim it improves their mood and helps them process their emotions and patterns, reduces muscle tension, increases mobility and stamina, and it helps people feel more comfortable with being seen and "taking up space". Some participants get breakthroughs, because they get into a state of flow that quiets the usual "noise" and fosters creativity.

Do you offer individual and group sessions?

Yes. You can request 1:1 sessions in case you want to work on a specific goal or create a specialised plan. Group sessions can have up to 30 participants.

Do the sessions take place in Kuahlia studio or in a place of the participant's choice?

At the moment, Kuahlia has no studio yet, so if you would like to experience therapeutic dance outside of our events, please arrange an adequate space (we recommend a minimum of 25 m2 for individual sessions and an extra 5 m2 for each additional participant). If the weather allows it, outdoor spaces might be suitable, as long as the floor is safe for dancing barefoot.
